In a majority ruling of approximately 71%, FINA declares that male-to-female athletes that have transitioned past the age of puberty re not allowed to compete in elite swimming competitions. This is the most restrictive ruling against transgender athletes that have been made to date. Strangely, the discrimination only extends to male-to-female athletes in female competitions. Female-to-male athletes are still allowed to compete in male swim competitions. This new policy is put into effect immediately and will exclude current athletes. The exhibited change leads to an abundance of political divide and subsequently advocacy from athletes.
