On a sunny Wednesday in May, athletes on the women’s track team wanted to practice wearing sports bras. They were immediately reprimanded by the school they attended, Albany High School, and were suspended from the team. Many team members found this treatment unjust because the parallel boy’s track team was allowed to practice without wearing a shirt. One of the members commented on what one of the administrators had said to her. ” ‘Wednesday, she confronted us about wearing sports bras and saying we couldn’t (just) wear sports bras because we have male coaches,’ ” Johnson said. ” ‘She said that before and she said us working out is a distraction. … We have to cover up because male coaches are around.’ ” The girls then attended the school’s lacrosse game as a protest and were again reprimanded via “disrespectful” letters and a private meeting where parents weren’t allowed to attend. With only two members remaining, twelve of the suspended athletes were reinstated onto the team. This misogynistic interpretation of the dress code led to an applaudable small-scale revolt within the school and is a step towards equal treatment.
