Athletes have been using their platform for outreach and social justice for quite some time now. It is common to see those who hold a large presence in the public eye to speak out against injustices, so why shouldn’t athletes?
Roe v. Wade’s overturn impacts athletes nationally and expands the equality gap amongst gendered sports. This overturn occurred just after Title IX’s 50th anniversary when they vowed to make advances in fair treatment for athletes. Mackay writes, “Women who participate in most sports have a narrow window to maximize their athletic potential, and these years often coincide with childbearing age.” Various athletes spoke out on the topic and expressed their disdain toward the Supreme Court decision. Many urge their fans to leverage the power of the digital get and start widespread movements, similar to me too. Athlete activism has a presence now more than ever and is not expected to slow down.
